Expanding Opportunities for Professional and Emerging Artists

FAMU School of Journalism & Graphic Communication (SJGC) visiting professor and alumnus Stan Johnson celebrated the opening of his new art gallery on Tallahassee’s Southside earlier this month. The Stan Johnson Creative Gallery carries forward the legacy of the former Anderson-Brickler Gallery, which was previously housed at the location and exhibited the work of modern, postwar and contemporary artists, with a focus on African American artists.

Johnson, who teaches visual communication and color theory at SJGC, is known in the community for his impact as a photographer, fine artist and designer.

In announcing the gallery, Johnson said he would preserve the Anderson-Brickler historic mission of creating opportunities for artists representing the Black community while also fostering an inclusive environment for creatives of all backgrounds.

The gallery’s objective is to “shape a vibrant future that centers artists, community and meaningful cultural experiences.” He explained during a local feature with ABC 27 WTXL that the gallery will not only showcase diverse talent but also offer mentorship for student artists and workshops that promote art and culture locally and beyond.

“SJGC is proud of the impact Professor Johnson is making not only in Tallahassee, but across the broader creative arts community,” said SJGC Dean Mira Lowe. “His commitment to showcasing the power of visual storytelling is an inspiration to our students, showing them how their talents can honor culture, elevate community, and shape history.”

FAMU students are already benefiting from the gallery, having the opportunity to learn firsthand about professional art practices and techniques by assisting with the launch of the gallery’s first exhibit.

“There are a lot of stories to be told, and art is a wonderful vehicle to be able to do that,” Johnson told WTXL.

According to the gallery’s website, Johnson’s aim is not only to continue “presenting ambitious, boundary-pushing work,” but also to offer:

  • Curated exhibitions;
  • Artist talks, studio visits and educational programs; and
  • Public access to special content, exclusive previews and behind-the-scenes narratives

The Stan Johnson Creative Gallery is located at 1747 S. Adams St. in Tallahassee. More information about the gallery’s offerings is available at www.sjc.gallery.
