Welcome back, SJGC.
I hope that your summer break was restorative and that you are eager for the semester ahead. I am looking forward to working with you as we march forward with new classes, new faculty, new initiatives, and new ideas.
As I reflect on this week, I am reminded that a year ago on Aug. 25, 2021, it was announced that I would be the next dean of the School of Journalism & Graphic Communication at FAMU. I remember being elated about the opportunity and overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response that I received. That excitement still carries me today.
The resiliency and resolve of this school and you over the past year have been inspiring.
Thank you for your continued commitment to relevant instruction and preparing our students for impactful careers in media; for your ongoing research efforts that are advancing the collective body of scholarship and generating fresh insights and perspectives; and for your service to the school, university, community and industry. Your contributions on committees, in workgroups and individually are strengthening our standards, policies and programs while expanding our influence.
This academic year, as we commemorate SJGC’s 40th anniversary, we will have much to do — hiring full-time faculty; conducting a self-study; launching our Writing Center, PR Agency, and Capital Bureau; expanding our online instruction; upgrading our facilities; acquiring funding and activating partnerships to grow and sustain our majors.
To accomplish all of this, we must forge together, support one another, be resourceful, nimble and flexible, as we face new challenges and embrace innovative opportunities.
Here’s to a momentous 2022-2023 academic year. Let’s get started!
