Valerie D. White, Ph.D. completed the Dow Jones News Fund Multimedia Training Academy held at the University of Texas-El Paso from June 4 to June 9, 2022. White serves as an associate professor with FAMU’s School of Journalism and Graphic Communication.
As one of nine faculty fellows from HBCUs or Hispanic-serving institutions, she worked on the Economic Development along the Mission Trail team. The boot-camp style training is designed to refresh digital media skills of journalism educators as they report on stories local to the El Paso community.
“The Dow Jones Multimedia Training was an excellent opportunity to refresh some skills I hadn’t used in a while. I also enjoyed the exposure to the Spanish culture since we were literally across the street from Mexico. It is always great to experience the richness of other cultures while covering a story. This multimedia training will assist me with preparing my students to progress through the curriculum and gain employment. “
Valerie White, Ph.D., Associate Professor
White said the training “gave her the experience of doing the same rigorous work she requires of her students.”
White’s story is “Meet Ralph Loya of Bodega Loya.” She also contributed to the web story. White will serve as a mentor to two students and will oversee her students’ participation with Borderzine.
