FAMU SJGC alum Nicholas Tuma is transforming brands and empowering communities—merging creativity with strategy to deliver bold, innovative design rooted in his graphic communication training.

From serving as image and layout editor for The FAMUan in 2010 to becoming one of Florida’s most sought-after creative professionals, Nicholas Tuma (’12) continues to show that graphic communication is about more than just producing logos, promotional material and websites.

Through his award-winning work, he champions the idea that creativity is built on “science, structure and strategy.”

An ever-loyal Rattler, who often takes to his platforms to cheer on FAMU, Tuma blends his expertise in art direction, creative consulting, branding, and marketing strategy with a passion for web design, SEO, iconography, typography, and color theory.

His multidisciplinary approach empowers companies and organizations to “unlock their brand potential, communicate more effectively and achieve measurable success.”

Tuma’s creative journey is also one of resilience. After beginning training in commercial art following high school, he was activated by the Florida Army National Guard in the wake of the September 11 attacks. Though his path took an unexpected turn, he remained committed to his passion. Upon returning to Tallahassee, he earned an associate degree in graphic design and creative writing from Tallahassee State College (formerly Tallahassee Community College). He later enrolled at FAMU, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in graphic design to further advance his skills.

“I was determined to one-up my skills,” he wrote in a post chronicling his professional journey. “At FAMU, I earned minors in fine art, photography and print management—laying the foundation for future chapters and endeavors.”

A former treasurer of the American Institute of Graphic Arts – Tallahassee chapter, Tuma has applied his creativity across industries to “support people, products and processes,” through his freelance work.

He currently serves as a graphic designer for NationsBenefits, the market leader in providing a comprehensive suite of supplemental benefits that address the needs of members across various healthcare areas.

His freelance design work has strengthened and elevated the brands of respected community and statewide pillars, including the FAMU Department of Music, The Tallahassee Democrat, Refuge House, Five Hives Apiary Honey, and The Cake Pop Shop, among others.
