Last month, the Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists announced the winners of its 2024 Florida News Awards. Among the 14 college and university television and radio broadcasting programs submitting more than 150 entries, Florida A&M University School of Journalism & Graphic Communication (FAMU SJGC) scholars were recognized in two categories for excellence in student journalism. The awards ceremony was held April 12 in Orlando.
Jasmine Dyer, a fall 2024 broadcast journalism graduate and former FAMU TV-20 entertainment anchor now working as a multimedia journalist at FOX54 in Georgia, won the general assignment reporting category for college television for her reporting on “Election Fact Checking” for FAMU TV-20 this academic year.
Broadcast journalism senior Joel Mitchell, spring 2025 broadcast journalism graduate Anissa Carby, and Kaitlyn Walsh, a FAMU–Florida State University co-op student who graduated this spring with a minor in journalism, were named finalists in the political reporting category for college television for their reporting in November on the FAMU TV-20 special “Race to 24.” FAMU SJGC students previously won this category for their coverage of the 2020 election in the special “Race to 20.”

“We are proud of the world-class training our students are receiving as participants in our broadcast programs and student media platforms,” said Dean Mira Lowe. “Their success underscores that we remain steadfast in our commitment to provide our scholars with experiential learning opportunities that prepare them for success in the industry.”
The Florida News Awards recognized outstanding work by professional and college-level broadcast journalists working in the Sunshine State. The college contest, which highlights excellence in student-produced content, was open to current and recently graduated students at any accredited university or college in the state.
