On April 25, Florida A&M University’s School of Journalism & Graphic Communication marked another milestone in its legacy of developing the next generation of multimedia journalists and communicators.
The school hosted its inaugural Digital Media Day, sponsored by the Garth C. Reeves Chair Professor Arionne Nettles, in SJGC’s lecture hall. The program, which welcomed more than 60 registrants, was open to all SJGC majors and experience levels.

Media instructors across SJGC disciplines came together to provide hands-on digital skills training and workshops, focusing on tools, trends, resources, and best practices in digital media.
The one-day event offered career coaching that placed a special emphasis on coding for journalists, interactive storytelling, and multimedia presentation, such as audio visualizer creation, a powerful tool for podcasters and audio journalists.

The event also included tips on learning the industry’s standards for file management and formatting, which are key aspects of successful digital media delivery.
Participants received a certificate of completion, helping to demonstrate discipline-specific training on their résumés, and received digital media swag to commemorate their experience.

“Thanks to the hard work of our faculty and staff, Digital Media Day was a success. Each session gave students the confidence to take their digital media skills to the next level and explore careers in the digital media space,” said Nettles, who led sessions alongside Professor of Journalism Clarence Fowler and WANM 90.5 Director Terrence Ward.

SJGC Dean Mira Lowe applauded the success of the event.
“Our role in training future media professionals to excel in digital storytelling has never been more critical,” said Lowe. “Our inaugural Digital Media Day activities underscored the core of our mission, which is to prepare students to be confident, multi-platform communicators for an evolving media marketplace. We look forward to providing our students with this experience next year.”
