Florida A&M University’s (FAMU) School of Journalism & Graphic Communication (SJGC) will debut its annual documentary showcase, J School Journals, on Saturday, December 7 at noon in the Lee Hall auditorium. This year’s event will feature a selection of thought-provoking, student-produced documentaries, as well as a live musical performance.
Race to 24, the centerpiece of the event, is a film collage chronicling the historic November 5, 2024, United States presidential election. Produced by FAMU SJGC students Joel Mitchell, Jordan Mongo and Kaitlyn Walsh, the presentation captures the emotions, challenges and experiences of United States citizens during the unprecedented election.
SJGC students have covered general elections since 2000/ This year’s showcase continues this tradition by presenting compelling narratives with fresh perspectives. In addition to Race to 24, J School Journals will include:
- Amen, Amen, Amen by Jalynn McDuffey and Asia Moore
- Two Hills, One City: FAMU & FSU by Anissa Carby
- Boyz to Men by Jordan Mongo and Deceni Suazo
- Jazz by Justin Lloyd and Shari Ryant
“These films showcase the exceptional talent and dedication of our students,” said Kenneth Jones, SJGC professor and director of the J School Journals. “The stories highlight the creativity of our filmmakers and illustrate their ability to address complex cultural and societal issues with depth and sensitivity.”
Each documentary explores unique cultural and social themes. Moore, co-producer of Amen, Amen, Amen, which examines the cultural impact of the Black Baptist Church, said she “wanted to explore its influence beyond just religion.”
Boyz to Men sheds light on the struggles of growing up without a father. “I wanted to show the challenges young men face without father figures,” said co-producer Suazo.
Additionally, in Two Hills, One City: FAMU & FSU, Carby explores the intertwined histories of Tallahassee’s two universities. “I hope my film inspires the audience to build a better future without dwelling on the past,” she said.
J School Journals will also include a Q&A session with the filmmakers, offering event participants the opportunity to delve deeper into the creative process and themes of each project. The event is free to attend. Additional details are available online or by calling 850.599.3379.
