Florida A&M University’s (FAMU) School of Journalism and Graphic Communication (SJGC) in collaboration with the University of Florida (UF) has been awarded the prestigious National Edward R. Murrow award. This esteemed honor highlights the exceptional work of both universities’ journalism programs and their commitment to excellence in reporting.

This year’s winning entry, UFxFAMU1963: Reporting from the U.S. Civil Rights Trail, was in the Small Market Television (professional category) and won for Excellence in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Produced in 2023 during spring break, the 11-member student team and four instructors from FAMU SJGC and UF joined to report across the U.S. Civil Rights Trail. Their findings were developed into a documentary that highlighted their ability to engage and inform the public on a sensitive, but ultimately timely subject. The Edward R. Murrow awards, presented annually by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) since 1971, are among the most respected journalism awards in the world. Named after legendary broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow, the awards recognize “local and national news stories that uphold the RTDNA Code of Ethics, demonstrate technical expertise, and exemplify the importance and impact of journalism as a service to the community.”
