Alonda Thomas, Florida A&M University’s (FAMU) School of Journalism & Graphic Communication (SJGC) alumna, has been appointed as the University’s chief marketing and communications officer. Thomas returns to FAMU after serving in her most recent position as the vice president for marketing and communications at Jackson State University (JSU).
Thomas’ career in public relations, marketing and communications spans more than 20 years. In addition to working for JSU, she served Howard University (HU) as the interim vice president of communication. While at HU she received several awards and recognitions including the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) 2022 Bronze Anvil for Executive Communications, the 2020 PRSA Bronze Anvil for Twitter Engagement, and PR Week’s 2020 Best in Crisis award. Prior to joining HU, Thomas worked at FAMU as the director of media relations and interim chief communications officer.
Thomas’ career also includes work as a publicity consultant for an Atlanta-based entertainment and sports marketing company. In addition to her bachelor’s degree from FAMU, she also earned a master’s degree in integrated marketing and management communications from Florida State University where she served as a university fellow and taught public speaking.
