FAMU SJGC Alumna is an SPJ 2024 Sunshine State Award Finalist for Sports Photo

Florida A&M University’s (FAMU) School of Journalism & Graphic Communication (SJGC) is proud to announce recent alumna Sydney Dorsey-Rencher has been named a finalist in the Society of Professional Journalism (SPJ) 2024 Sunshine State Awards in the Sports Photo category. This honor recognizes Dorsey-Rencher’s exceptional skill and talent for capturing the excitement and intensity of FAMU’s mighty Rattler athletics program.

Dorsey-Rencher’s honored photos, which captured pivotal moments during the athletic competitions, display her talent for understanding composition and timing while also generating excitement for the University’s athletic prowess.

“We are thrilled our student, now alumnus, has received this honor,” said Mira Lowe, FAMU SJGC dean. “Her ability to connect viewers to the emotion and drama of a game through photography is extraordinary.”[HJ1] 

SPJ has hosted the Sunshine State Awards, the state’s oldest and largest journalism contest recognizing the best writing, photography and design for professionals and students, for more than 50 years. The contest celebrates professional and student journalism across the state with categories spanning various media formats. The winners and runners-up, selected from the list of finalists, will be announced and honored during the awards celebration in August.
