Dontaira Terrell, Florida A&M University (FAMU) School of Journalism & Graphic Communication alumna, and her sister, Zakkiyyah Terrell White, recently purchased their hometown’s newspaper, the Buckeye Review. The sisters will both serve as co-publishers with Dontaira as editor-in-chief and Zakkiyyah as chief operating officer,

In an interview last month with Ebony Magazine the sisters said returning to the paper was a “full circle moment.” Dontaira said one of her first memories of the paper was when she was interviewed by her sister, who worked as an intern for the publication more than three decades ago.

The duo plan to use the monthly paper to highlight marginalized communities by providing a print and digital platform to share stories. They also plan to feature the culture, successes and challenges of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and incorporate a journalism institute for students.

Dontaira told Ebony Magazine she is hopeful their approach will attract younger audiences and reengage previous readers.

‘”We want to reach a younger audience and get people excited again to pick up a physical copy  (of a newspaper), to learn history, or some quick facts, or get entertained,’” she said.

The sisters are also optimistic their new direction for the paper will create a legacy that extends beyond their family.

‘”We’d like to ensure that we leave our footprint. We realize and recognize that we, too, are a representation of not just ourselves, but generations to come.’”
